I once had a conversation with a travelling musician about inequality in the world. He said something that really shocked me - "I think that, if they really worked hard enough, any poor person in the world could make it - travel to America and make a better life for their family."
I replied - "What if you were born way up in the mountains of some desperately poor region? You have no birth certificate so you don't exist. Your parents can't read or write. You live on $0.30 per day. Will never go to school. You will never even see a foreigner, let alone live in a first world country."
I started working with International Care Ministries (ICM) in the Philippines in 2010. In some ways, it is where I grew up; where I discovered passions, asked myself some big, hard questions about the world, where I learned who I am and what I believe in.
Through education and bringing hope for the future, ICM is a catalyst in communities that allows the poorest people to build a better life.
I spent three years living in the Philippines, and have interviewed hundreds of people who testify to the power of hope and the value of education. I have learned not to be guilty for the blessed circumstances I live in, but to be generous, aware, and humbly learn that "we" in the west definitely do not have it all figured out.
